"Peek at the Week" November 17-21

We had a great week in first grade! I am truly amazed each day of what these little minds can do!! I feel so blessed to work with these amazing kiddos each day :)

Math Workshop
This week we worked on solving mixed story problems! We had to determine whether we were solving for an unknown partner or unknown total!

We started the week by practicing writing addition and subtraction sentences that represent math mountains.  This helped us understand the relationship between addition and subtraction when solving number stories!

Next, we began solving number stories. We practiced using math moutains and equations to help us solve for the unknown.

Reader's Workshop
This week we practiced retelling our stories- in writing! It is quite challenging to move from 'talking about reading' to 'writing about reading'! This responsibility was gradually released to us this week. First, we practiced retelling a story together while Mrs. Witkov (our literacy coach) recorded our words in writing.
Then, we went and practiced writing what we said.

The next day, we read a new story. We came up with the beginning, middle, and end together with a sketch. Then, we got a partner and worked together to record the words.

On Thursday we read a new story and retold the story in writing independently!  I was blown away with how amazing these kids did wih this task!

Word Work
We continued learning about the short and long sounds of A. We learned a fun new game called 4 in a row!

We played many variations of this game throughout the week!

We also practiced our vowels sounds by making words from letters!

We also reviewed all of our word wall word we learned this trimester! We practiced on spelling city and by going on a word wall hunt! We hunted for QR codes that all 'hid' a word wall word!

Science
We learned about the 3 types of clouds this week- cirrus, stratus, and cumulus.

Field Trip
We had a blast at Betty Brinn!!

Next week is our Fall Informance! 1st graders will perform on Tuesday at 2:00pm. Wednesday students are dismissed at 12:30.

I hope you had a great weekend!!
Love,
Mrs. Hogue

"Peek at the Week" November 10-14

 Math Workshop

This week we continued learning about unknown partners in subtraction situations. We learned that we can count on from the known partner to find the unknown partner. It is much easier for children to solve 7-4=? by starting at 4 and counting on 5,6,7 than to start at 7 and count backwards 4. It also helps children better understand the relationship between addition and subtraction.

We practiced solving number stories this week by drawing math mountains and writing both an addition and subtraction story that represents the situation.

On Friday, we explored a new app called 10 Frame Fill that helped us practice solving unknown partners in both addition and subtraction equations!

Reader's Workshop

We continued retelling on the Yellow Brick Road! This week we put all of the pieces together to retell our stories. We layed out the yellow brick road and practiced retelling during independent reading!

We also got a bookmark to keep in our bookbins. We used them to help us retell. We really worked on retelling the most important parts of the story! We had opportunities to practice retelling in small groups, with partners, and independently!

Your child is bringing home his/her retelling bookmark this weekend to share with you!

Word Work
This week we started our 10 week study on vowels!
1st graders are expected to:
*Distinguish between long and short vowel sounds
*Recognize the silent e makes a vowel long
*Identify basic long vowel patterns (ex. ai, ee, ou, etc.)

This week we began learning about the long and short sounds of A.

We sorted long and short a words/pictures

We also got out our highlighters and highlighted Long A words! For this activity we practiced identifying long A words with the silent E.

In addition to learning about vowels, we are still learning 5 new word wall words each week! This week we learned the words:
There
How
If
Will
Too

We practiced these words on a fun website called Spelling City! You can access this through my blog on the website page!

Next week we will be reviewing all of the word wall words we have learned so far, so there won't be any new words.

Science
We started learning about the water cycle this week! We noticed that our puddles we put out last week dried up, or evaporated!

When water evaporates it forms clouds in the sky! We read a fun story about clouds called It Looked Like Spilt Milk!

Then we made our own version of the book by painting clouds with shaving cream and glue!
