"Peek at the Week" November 3-6

We had a busy 4 day week together this week!  Take a look at what we did!

Math Workshop
We started Unit 3 this week on unknown numbers in addition andsubtraction.  This week we focused on unknown partner stories.  In unknown number stories, we are told the total and a known partner. Our job is to solve for the unknown partner!

We had fun using our own pictures to solve unknown partner stories!

We used math mountains to help us solve number stories!

We also learned how to solve these problems by using circle drawings and counting on with our fingers! First graders are encouraged to use any of these methods when solving number stories!

Reader's Workshop
This week we took a trip down the yellow brick road!

We leanrned how to retell fiction stories this week!

We learned that readers need to think about the setting of the story- the where and the when.

We learned that readers need to think about the most important characters, or the main characters. They can ask themselves who is the story mostly about?

Next, readers ask themselves what is the problem in the story. (Or what does the character want)

Readers notice that usually the probelm is solved by the end of the story.

We marked the problem and solution in our stories this week!

On Thursday we stated learning that readers think about the most important part of the beginning, middle, and end of the story.  These parts should be important to understanding the story to someone who has never read the book before!

Next week we will begin putting all the pieces together!

Word Work
This week we added 5 new words to our word wall:
Your
When
Said
Went
Were

We practiced or words in an activity called Roll It Write It!

I also started putting up our word wall words on Spelling City. This is a great website to practice words! Visit:

Look for the lists named Week 1-7.

Science
We are started taking a closer look at rain and puddles this week. We will be learning about the water cycle over the next several weeks. We put rain gauges outside to collect the rainfall. We will be recording and observing the rainfall over the next few weeks.

We also started an experiment on puddles. We made 4 'puddles' in pie tins and will be observing what happens to the water. Many children predicted the puddles will dry up.

I hope you enjoyed your weekend!

"Peek at the week" October 20-24 & 27-31

Here is a peek into our past 2 weeks!

Math Workshop
We wrapped up unit 2 this week! Your child should bring his/her assessment home on Monday.
We continued solving subtraction story problems by making a proof drawing and equation. We learned that it is important to be able to prove your thinking when solving story problems.

We then began focusing on related equations. We explored the relationship between addition and subtraction facts.

Reader's Workshop

We continued our focus on word detectives. We added new strategies to our chart to help us figure out tricky words:
Is it a word wall word?
Does it look like another word you know?
Look for chunks you know.
Skip the word and go back.
Re-read. Go back and try another startegy.

We also added another piece to our readers workshop- listen to reading! Wecan listen to stories on the iPod and on the computer.

Word Work
This week we added 5 new words to our word wall:
But
All
Not
Over
What

We also learned two new ways to practice our words- word wall equations and vowel/consonant writing!

Halloween

We had a fun day together on Friday! First, we made a retelling project for the book Big Pumpkin.

Next, we mad a fun treat called Frankenpudding!

Forst, we drew Frankenstein faces on a clear cup.

Then we added vanilla pudding.

Next, we stirred on green food coloring to make the pudding green!

The last step was to smash up Oreo cookies to add to the pudding!

We loved this yummy treat!

We had so much fun dressing up for the costume parade!!  I had some very photogenic first graders that kept begging for more pictures...so here you go!!

I hope you had a fabulous weekend!
