Hello 1st grade families! Sorry for the delayed blog update this week!
Here is a peek into last week's learning!
Writer's Workshop
We started a new unit on realistic fiction! This topic was greeted by first graders with cheers and fist pumps!
We began discussing realistic fiction stories and the elements we find in them. Then, children were encouraged to think of at least 3 realistic fiction stories they could write about.
Next, children took these stories and 'told' them across their fingers. This helps children plan each part of the story. After this, children wrote the first page to all their story ideas. We learned that authors often begin many pieces before deciding on just one!
After writing our first pages, we met with our writing partners to share our ideas. We will be working closely with our writing partners this unit to get new ideas and feedback!
Reader's Workshop
This week we continued focusing on making connections as we read. We focused on how connections help us understand what we are reading. As we made connections this week, we sorted them into two groups- connections that help us gain a deeper understanding (connecting with the theme of the story) and connections that don't really help us gain a deeper understanding (connections that only connect with one specific event).
Sorting connection cards.
On Friday, we read a story called Ira Sleeps Over.
After reading, we worked in small groups to share our connections and create a group poster! It was great to see the teamwork and wonderful connections we made!
Word Work
We learned a fun new way to practice our words this week. It is called "Pyramid Writing"! Can you guess why?
**There will be NO new word sorts the week of March 4**
Math Workshop
We began our geometry unit this week! (Just as an FYI- this is a very short unit and will wrap it up next week!)
We began by looking at the attributes of shapes. We focused on size, color, thickness, and shape.
Everyone was given a block and had to come up with 4 attributes for it! We did a great job!
Next, we explored polygons.
I showed the children these examples and non examples of polygons. Then, the children were encouraged to work with their partner to write a definition for a polygon!
Next, we created some polygons of our own!
Here are two of our centers this week:

Time Is Up
I hope you had a great weekend! I am looking forward to meeting with the rest of you this week during conferences :)
Love,
Ms. Havig
