"Peek at the Week" April 22-26

It is finally beginning to look and feel like spring outside...wah-hoo!!  The kids are definitely excited to get out in the sunshine each day :)

We had a busy, busy week!  Take a peek :)

Reader's Workshop

We continued our unit on nonfiction.  This week we learned that readers get their minds ready to read nonfiction by thinking about what they know and asking questions about the topic.  We spent the week recording our questions on the topic of choice.  

We shared our questions and answers with our partners.

On Friday we looked over our questions and chose one we thought was the most interesting to publish in our class book!

 

 Writer's Workshop

We wrapped up our How-To writing this week!  Everyone was able to publish one How-To piece to bring home.  We had a lot of fun with this type of writing :)

 Math Workshop

We explored the 120 chart this week.  Our big focus was on adding and subtracting 10 from a number.  We realized very quickly that numbers below are 10 more, and numbers above are 10 less!

We also learned how to add multiples of 10.  We worked with a partner to color in the answers to 9 problems.  These answers reviled a 'hidden picture'!

Another way we practice using the 120 table is completing number grid puzzles.  In a number grid puzzle a 'piece' of the grid has been taken out and we have to fill in the missing numbers!

We read the problems on the worlds and sorted them into true/false categories.

Place Value Dominoes

We made 2 digit numbers from dominoes and compared them using <, >, =.

Spinning Around the Earth

We chose a two digit number and spun to determine if we would add or subtract 10 from that number. 

Junior Achievement 

This week we started our first of six Junior Achievement lessons.  We will be focusing on our families.  

 

I am always amazed at how much we do in a week :)  First grade is so much fun!
