We had a great first week of school! We were very busy this week
learning about our new friends and routines of first grade! Take a look
at what we were up to!
Writer's Workshop
We will launch our 'official' writer's workshop on Monday. This week we spent time writing pages for class books!
On Tuesday we read a very familiar book called
Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?
Then, we made our own version called First Grader, First Grader, Who Do You See? This book included all of our friends!
On Wednesday we read a story called Wembery Worried. We talked about how scary it can be to come to school and that making friends can help us feel better!
Then, we all interviewed a new friend! We made a class book called First Grade Friends.
On Friday we read If You Take a Mouse to School. We talked about different things we needed in order to go to school!
Then we made a class book called If You Take a First Grader to School.
Readers's Workshop
This week we focused on reading behaviors and how readers read books. We talked about how readers stay focused on their books by staying in one spot, keeping their voices quiet, and keeping their eyes on the page. We began practicing these skills in order to build our stamina!
These first graders did such a wonderful job!
We then learned that there are 3 ways to read a book.
*Read the Words
*Read the Pictures
*Retell the story
We continued practicing building our stamina by having our friends model correct and incorrect reading behaviors! (of course we had a lot of fun demonstrating what NOT to do when reading!)
On Friday, we began our class stamina chart! We were able to read 3 minutes as a class! We will continue building our stamina until we reach 20 minutes!!
Word Work
We learned a first grade chant this week! This was the first poem we put into our poetry binder!
We also turned the chant into a mini book to keep in our book bins to read during Reader's Workshop!
We also began King and Queen of the Day this week! This is a first grade tradition in which one child is selected each day to be the King or Queen. They get to wear a crown, be interviewed by our class, and have their name addded to our word wall! Mrs. Hogue was the first queen of the day! Mario was our first King on Friday!
Math Workshop
This week we talked about how math (numbers) is all around us. We created a "math about me' person that we hung on our math board! (I am so sorry I forgot to take a picture of these!)
We also explored some math manipulatives in our classroom and learned how to use them appropriately.
It was an amazing first week together! Next week we will be creating our classroom social contract and working on being safe, kind, and fair at school. Please be sure to check out some updated important dates on the left side of the page!
I hope you had a wonderful weekend1
Love,
Mrs. Hogue
