"Peek at the Week" January 7-11

Take a look at what we were up to this week!

Reader's Workshop
This week we began focusing on characters and their traits.  We are discussing how getting to know characters helps us know our stories better.  The children each found a character in a book they were reading and came up with on trait to describe them.  Next week we will be diving into fully exploring our characters.
Writer's Workshop
We are continuing using authors as mentors.  This week we read a story by Angela Johnson called Joshua's Night Whispers.

This is a story about the author's son who cannot sleep one night.  It is a perfect example of taking a topic (her son) and focusing on one tiny moment (a night he could not sleep.)  Children were given their own "Tiny Moments Notebooks" to jot down moments they would like to write about.  We are really working on developing one moment at a time in our writing.

Word Work
This week we began focusing on plural nouns.  We looked at nouns that need an -s and -es ending.  We will continue this study into next week.

Math Workshop
This week we learned all about greater than, less than, and equal to.  These first graders rock at this concept!  We used the 'alligator' analogy to help us remember each sign.  The alligator's mouth is always open to the bigger number!

In addition, we worked in math stations. Take a look!
