"Peek at the Week" October 28- November 1

We had another fun, but busy week in room 126!  Here is a peek at what we have been up to....

Writer's Workshop
We began the week revising our stories.  Writers can revise by fixing up words, adding on to stories, and using revision strips.

Next we learned how we can make our writing better by working with a writing partner.  We learned how planning your story with a partner can make help make your story more detailed.

Reader's Workshop

We wrapped up our study on tricky words. We now are focusing on tricky parts of books.  It is important that readers understand the stories they read.  One way readers can check for understanding is by retelling.  This week we learned how to retell by "Following the Yellow Brick Road".

We retell by remembering important details and sequencing events.  We practiced retelling the following steps :

characters
setting
problem
beginning
next
then
finally
solution

We retold several Halloween stories this week!  We even got a chance to walk down the Yellow Brick Road and practice retelling!

On Thursday we made a retelling project to go with the story Big Pumpkin.  I hope your child was able to retell this fun story to you!

Word Work

This week we focused on the long and short sounds of Ii.  We started the week with a new word sort.  We sorted pictures or words by long/short Ii.

Math Workshop

We continued our focus on subtraction story problems this week.  We are working hard to prove our thinking by showing our work when we solve problems.

We had some fun math stations this week!  They included:
 True/Not True cauldron sorts

Subtraction Bowling

Halloween Fun
We had so much fun making monster stew and having a costume parade on Thursday!  Check out all our fun :)

I hope you had a wonderful weekend :)
Love,
Mrs. Hogue
