'Peek at the Week' September 21-25

We had a very successful evacuation and reunification drill on Friday afternoon!  Although it is always scary to think of why we practice this drill, I feel so much better  practicing the procedures for being safe!

We began our MAP testing on Friday. We will continue with the math portion this week. We will also being our PALS assessments early in the week.

Here is a peek at our week!

Reader's Workshop
This week we focused on habits readers build for seeing more as they read.  We learned:
Readers 'scoop up' words with their eyes.  1st grade readers are learning to use their eyes, not their fingers, to read the words. This helps to build fluency and expression when we read!

Readers re-read to see MORE! Re-reading is a critical competent of comprehension. This week we practiced rereading and sharing new details and thoughts we had with our partners. There are many thoughts or ideas we miss the first time we read something!

Math Workshop
We started our first unit in Math Expressions on number partners. We learned number partners are two numbers that work together to make a new number.

We practiced identifying the 5-group in the numbers 5-10. We can name these numbers as '5 and some more'. For example, the number 7 is '5 and 2 more'. We also practiced writing addition sentences to match!

We also practiced identifying number partners by making math mountains. We will use math mountains to help us add and subtract throughout the year!

Writer's Workshop
Well I must have been so busy with hear little writers this week to snap any pictures!

This week we learned the very beginning stages of revision! Writers can read stories they have finished and ask themselves how to make it even better. Can I add more details to my pictures or words? Did I leave out any important parts? Does my ending make sense?

Next we learned how to keep our stories focused by 'zooming in ' on the most important part of our stories. Rather than trying to write about our entire weekend, we can focus on the park when we went apple picking!

Word Work
We added 5 new words to our word wall:

Where
Are
Was
In
On

We practiced these words on Spelling City!
This is a free website and app. You can access our words by the following URL:

We also learned about 4 friends! King Mercer, King Jae, Queen Theresa, and King Quentin!

Reminder- if you have not returned your conference form, please do so ASAP.

Enjoy the weekend :)

Love,
Mrs. Hogue
